Charge Your House Battery While Driving

The Victron Orion XS DC-DC Battery Charger delivers controlled alternator charging for 12V dual-battery systems in vans, RVs and boats. Adjustable input and output current limits help match charging to your vehicle, wiring and battery requirements, while built-in Bluetooth makes monitoring and setup straightforward.

Choose the 50A model for up to 700W or the 70A model for up to 1,000W of charging output. Both offer up to 98.5% efficiency and full rated output at ambient temperatures up to 104°F with proper installation and cooling.

Important Info

Both models in this listing are 12V-to-12V chargers. The 50A model is IP65-rated; the 70A model is IP20 and requires a dry indoor installation.

Key Features

  • Alternator charging: Recharge a compatible 12V house battery while driving.
  • Adjustable charging current: Configure input and output limits to suit available alternator capacity, wiring and battery specifications.
  • Smart alternator compatibility: Configurable engine-running detection supports conventional and smart alternator installations.
  • Bluetooth monitoring: Use VictronConnect to view charging data, adjust settings and update firmware.
  • Programmable charging: Eight battery presets and custom settings support lithium and common lead-acid chemistries.
  • Adaptive charging: Adjusts absorption time for lead-acid batteries based on discharge depth.
  • Electronic protection: Includes input undervoltage lockout, overload protection, short-circuit protection and thermal output reduction.
  • Optional system integration: Connect to a compatible GX device through VE.Direct for additional monitoring and control.
  • Power supply mode: Provides an adjustable DC output for suitable applications.

Choose Your Charger

Orion XS 12/12-50A

Provides up to 50A of charging current and approximately 700W at 14V. Its IP65 protection rating provides dust and water-jet protection when installed according to the manual.

Orion XS 12/12-70A

Provides up to 70A of charging current and approximately 1,000W at 14.3V. Choose this model when your alternator, wiring and battery can support the higher charging rate.

The complete 70A charger is IP20 and must be installed in a dry indoor location. Its power electronics have an IP65 enclosure, but this does not make the complete charger IP65-rated.

Actual charging power depends on operating voltage, available input power, configured current limits and cooling. Full rated output up to 104°F requires the mounting clearance and cooling conditions specified by Victron.

Installation Considerations

Select the charger based on your vehicle's available alternator capacity and your battery's permitted charging current. A higher-rated charger does not mean every vehicle can supply its maximum output.

Installation requires correctly sized cables and fuses, suitable mounting clearance, and charging settings matched to the battery. Follow the model-specific manual for cable sizing, grounding, engine detection and BMS connections.

Bluetooth provides local monitoring through VictronConnect. Internet-based remote monitoring requires additional compatible equipment, including an internet-connected GX device. Low-temperature charging protection requires an appropriate battery-temperature signal or BMS control; the charger does not independently measure battery temperature.

Frequently Asked Questions (click to expand)

1. What is the difference between the 50A and 70A models?

The 70A provides a higher maximum charging current, provided your vehicle and battery support it. The 50A is IP65-rated, while the 70A is IP20 and requires a dry indoor installation.

2. Can these models charge a 24V battery?

No. These are 12V-to-12V models. For 12V/24V applications, consider the separate Orion XS 1400.

3. Will it work with a smart alternator?

Yes. The Orion XS supports smart alternator applications, including Euro 5 and Euro 6 systems. Engine detection and current limits must be configured for the vehicle.

4. Can I use it with lithium batteries?

Yes, with compatible charging settings and appropriate BMS control. Confirm the battery manufacturer's voltage, current and temperature requirements before installation.

5. Can I turn down the charging current?

Yes. Input and output current limits are configurable through VictronConnect, allowing you to match charging to your alternator, wiring and battery limits.

6. Does it have built-in Wi-Fi?

No. It has built-in Bluetooth for local monitoring and configuration through VictronConnect. Remote internet monitoring requires additional compatible GX equipment.

7. Is it a solar charge controller?

No. It is a DC-DC battery charger. Solar panels require a suitable solar charge controller.

8. Can I connect more than one charger?

Yes. Victron supports parallel installations for increased charging capacity. Total current must remain within the alternator, battery and wiring limits.
