The RoamAir R2 combines air conditioning and heat-pump heating in one compact rooftop system designed for campervans, trailers, and overland vehicles. Available in 12V and 48V configurations, the R2 connects to a compatible DC electrical system and provides heating and cooling through a single roof-mounted unit.
At the center of the R2 is a twin rotary, double-rotor compressor. Compared with many conventional DC scroll compressor designs, this configuration provides smoother variable-speed operation, reduced vibration, lower noise, and improved efficiency in mobile and off-grid applications. The 12V model provides approximately 8,000 BTU of heating and cooling with an average power draw of 660 watts. The 48V model provides 10,000 BTU of heating and cooling with an average draw of 897 watts. A soft-start inverter design eliminates the large startup surge associated with many traditional air conditioners, reducing unnecessary stress on batteries and supporting electrical components. The R2 also provides 265 CFM of airflow and installs through a standard 14 x 14-inch roof opening.
Select the voltage that matches your vehicle's electrical system. The 12V and 48V models are not interchangeable. The RoamAir R2 is not RV-C compatible. Before ordering, verify exterior roof clearance, the required 14 x 14-inch opening, and a finished ceiling thickness between 3.15 and 4.72 inches.
The 12V model provides approximately 8,000 BTU of heating and cooling and has a 660-watt average power draw. The 48V model provides 10,000 BTU of heating and cooling and has an average power draw of 897 watts. Select the model that matches your electrical system voltage.
Yes. The R2 uses heat-pump technology to provide heating and air conditioning from the same rooftop unit. The 12V model is rated at approximately 8,000 BTU, while the 48V model is rated at 10,000 BTU for both heating and cooling. Heat-pump performance declines near freezing. Until cold-weather testing is confirmed, we recommend 37°F as a conservative minimum and a backup heater for colder conditions.
The twin rotary compressor uses two rotors to provide smoother operation and reduced vibration. It is designed to improve variable-speed performance, efficiency, and reliability compared with many conventional DC scroll compressor designs.
The manufacturer states that the soft-start inverter design has no startup surge current. This reduces the sudden electrical load commonly associated with traditional air-conditioner compressor startup.
The RoamAir R2 installs through a standard 14 x 14-inch roof opening. You must also verify sufficient exterior clearance for the complete 31.5 x 26.18-inch rooftop unit.
The published adjustable ceiling-thickness range is 3.15 to 4.72 inches.
The 12V model averages 660 watts and has a published maximum draw of 792 watts. The 48V model averages 897 watts and has a published maximum draw of 994 watts. Actual consumption may vary with operating conditions, temperature settings, and compressor speed.
No. The RoamAir R2 is not RV-C compatible.
The listed configurations include a black interior faceplate with either a white or black exterior rooftop shroud.
A one-year manufacturing warranty per terms and exclusions.

Love it! I researched a lot before deciding on Orion. I just think their design out looks all the others. This is functional, solid, and easy install. Customer service was excellent. They answered all my questions. I didn’t build my van, I bought it already done. Solar panel and all, I was able to move the solar panel to a better location using their solar panel brackets, I’ll easily add some decking following their recommendations of what decking product to use, and be able to store items I don’t want in the van. Love supporting a local Oregon business. Would recommend them to everyone. Oh and I got the rack with the lights. Totally recommend. The install was perfect and they really light up the night!
Thank you, Krysta! It’s so great to see everything come together on your van. We’re glad we could help you get the solar placement dialed in and plan for decking and extra storage. And thank you for sharing the videos showing off the rear scene lights and flush solar brackets; they’re a huge help to others planning their setups! We really appreciate your recommendation and support for a local Oregon business. Enjoy your adventures!
The ladder is awesome. Super solid. Customer service was also super awesome. Answered my zillion questions quickly through email. Orion products just look so sleek and … stealthy. Glad to support a local business as well. Maybe that’s why shipping was next day.
Hi Krysta, thank you for the video! Glad you love it! Made in Oregon!
Very nice, well built and affordable panels.
I just drove the van for the first time with the rack and 400w solar upgrade installed. At 70+ mph (eastbound) the wind noise / speech intelligibility was not degraded and may have even improved. The front fairing and its integration into the rack is a very nice design. Looks fantastic on the van. Excellent engineering! The assembly guides are well detailed and the team responds to all additional questions within 24 hours, which is outstanding support. The slightly higher premium paid for the Orion Van Gear Stealth Rack verses the completion is worth every penny. Highly recommended.
